It takes just a few minutes to write a letter to the HPRB. Proponents of the historic district have already sent numerous letters from people inside and outside the proposed district. We need to show the HPRB that the community does not want such a district. A letter to the HPRB is the most effective way to express your view that the proposed historic district does not qualify for recognition, would subvert and obstruct the ordinary processes for neighborhood change, and would unfortunately perpetuate the exclusivity that was part of the design of our neighborhood. Let Chevy Chase continue to live, change, and evolve, as it has for the past 100 years.
Tips for an effective letter. See below for some model letters that can be used as is or adapted as you wish, and bullet points that can be included in a letter. While expressing your own views, keep in mind that the most effective letters to the HPRB do not simply address the severe restrictions on homeowners' rights in a historic district, since those restrictions are common to every historic district. It is best to talk not only about the burdens on homeowners, but also about the reasons why the HPRB should reject this particular district.
Be sure to include (a) your name and street address (and email address), (b) whether you live in, near, or outside the boundaries of the proposed historic district, (c) a simple sentence near the beginning that you oppose the application for a Chevy Chase Historic District, (d) a statement of reasons for your opposition, and (e) a final sentence asking the HPRD to reject the application. See below for some model letters that you can use as is or adapt, and bullet points that you may want to include.
See below for downloadable sample letters and bullet points that you may find useful. It takes just a few minutes to fill in the details and send the model letter as is. Or you can adapt it as you wish. The bullet points can be added to one of the samples or used as you wish in writing your own letter.
Once you've written your letter, please remember to sign it and to include your street address. Then, email it directly to the HPRB (historic.preservation@dc.gov), or send it via usps to HPRB (Ms. Marnique Heath, Chair Historic Preservation Review Board 1100 4th Street, SW, Suite 650 East Washington, DC 20024 ). Please let us know that you have done this by emailing us a copy, too, at LivingChevyChaseDC@gmail.com. We'd like to keep track and make sure your letter is filed correctly. You can also send a copy to the mayor or your councilmember - see below for email addresses.
We have to catch up to the well-organized group trying to impose the historic district on the rest of us.
Talk to your friends and neighbors. Encourage them to visit our website, write letters, make their views known.
Tell your ANC Commissioner that you don't want the HPRB put in control of your house or our neighborhood. Send copies of your HPRB letter or otherwise let the Mayor (eom@dc.gov) and your councilmember (Matt Frumin mfrumin@dccouncil.gov or Janeese George jlewisgeorge@dccouncil.gov ) know your views.
